Chios Mastic as a bactericide against Helicobacter Pylori

Chios Mastic as a bactericide against Helicobacter Pylori
Chios mastic is a natural resin made from an evergreen tree grown in the Mediterranean countries.

This study, published in the Journal of Chemotherapy, evaluated the antibacterial action of mastic, the resin obtained from the Pistacia lentiscus, against clinical isolated strains of Helicobacter pylori.

This substance was known by the ancient Greeks and is used to relieve upper abdominal discomfort, gastralgia, indigestion and peptic ulcer. Mastic has been reported to be effective in the treatment of benign peptic ulcer and duodenal ulcers.

The purpose of this study is to determine the antibacterial activity of Chios mastic against Helicobacter pylori. The strains used in this study were 12 recent isolates from patients, 4 susceptible in clarithromycin and metronidazole, 4 resistant in clarithromycin and 4 resistant to clarithromycin and metronidazole. Minimal bactericidal concentrations were obtained by a micro-dilution assay. A solution of mastic in ethanol at a concentration of 40,000 g/ml was prepared and diluted in the broth culture to a final concentration of 2000 to 1.9 g / ml. The inoculum size used was 107 Helicobacter pylori per ml.

The cultures were incubated at 37 °C in a capnophilic atmosphere (10% CO2). The minimal drug concentration required to kill 99.9% of the bacteria in the medium after 24 hour incubation was determined by conducting aliquots on agar plates.

Mastiha appeared to be an effective bactericide against Helicobacter pylori. Kill 50% of the strains tested at a concentration of 125 g / ml. The four strains susceptible to clarithromycin and metronidazole were inhibited by 62.5 g / ml.

The results of this study show us that Mastic has powerful antibacterial activity against Helicobacter Pylori. Further studies are needed to establish the role of mastic in the treatment of peptic ulcer and Helicobacter pylori infection.
